To a large extent, the Iranian calendar is a manifestation of the contribution of Isfahan in general and Omar Khayyam in particular, to astronomy and mathematics.
Thanks for that Omer! I didn't know about the Jalili calendar actually:
"As an astronomer, he calculated the duration of the solar year with remarkable precision and accuracy, and designed the Jalali calendar, a solar calendar with a very precise 33-year intercalation cycle which provided the basis for the Persian calendar that is still in use after nearly a millennium."
This is taken from Vol IV of The Cambridge History of Iran, which happens to be the volume written by probably the most esteemed western historian on Iran, Richard N. Frye (ex Professor Emeritus of Iranian Studies at Harvard)...
His book "The Heritage of Persia" is on my bedside table 👀
I remembered that he'd requested in his will to be buried in Iran, and the request was even granted by that dirtbag ahmadinejad... What I didn't know was the location - next to Zayandeh River in Isfahan! 😃
Does it go into detail about Isfahan? I really want to visit the place. Always been fascinated by places where everything comes together, economics, culture, academics, talent, etc, leading to mind blowing creations such as the Jalili calendar.
Slow reader that I am, I'm not even close to finishing 😅 But no, The Heritage of Persia starts from the Aryan arrival (2nd millennium BC) until after the Arab invasion (~ 10th century AD).
For Isfahan you need to read about the 16th century Safavid Empire 😀
Reading SPAM while in an airport lounge should be recommended reading!
Very amusing to read about the Gregorian calendar 😃… growing up with it, it just makes sense 🤷♂️.. kind of like you never wonder if your baby is ugly because that’s the one you got 😅
Loved the story about the Persian sins, marathon runner for 54 years and your fricking dynamic entertaining style.
Yep, I grew up with it (and what does a kid know anyway lol), then had the Solar one as a teen, and THEN when I came back to this I realised how nonsensical it actually is 😂
Haha, I praaaay my baby won't be ugly... I'm not gonna hold back if it is 😂

Ahhh now I'm going into another rabbit hole haha.

That’s a beautiful river, but unfortunately, it was damned just like the Tigris and Euphrates further west

Yeah, for the calendar thing, isn’t that true? When we grow up and have a realization like that “wait, things CAN be different”…
btw - fyi I learned how to use quotes in substack by seeing how you use them. I was refusing to read instructions and not having much success. 😁
